What is a Half Bred Quarter Horse?
|
The American Quarter Horse Association is the largest breed registry in the world, with over 4 million numbers assigned and the American Quarter Horse is the most versatile breed in the world, with the largest selection of permitted colors.
For these reasons alone, it is easy why so many horsemen and horsewomen are in love with and own Quarter Horses, or horses with partial Quarter Horse blood.
There are Quarter Horses that drive, race, halter, run barrels, cut cows, are finished reiners, and even some who are ridden in English and Sport horse events. There are big 17 hand and small 14 hand Quarter Horses. Permitted colors are blue and red roans, buckskins, duns, bays, sorrels, grays, blacks, browns, and even palominos.
When these fantastic qualities are crossed with other breeds and/or unregistered or grade horses, there is no limit to the resulting sizes, colors and aptitudes of the offspring.
The problem with owning many of these crosses has always been, however, that when it comes time to sell a horse, unless it has papers, it is considered and advertised as Grade, with an approximate age.
It is the goal of the American Half Quarter Horse Registry to address this problem and provide a viable alternative and solution, while incurring very little expense to the owner.
Once a horse is actually registered it can be sold as a horse with papers, and its offspring will be able to continue being registered from generation to generation.
Both horses that are descended from one registered and one unregistered parent and horses with both parents registered, but from different registries, are eligible.
When registered, a horse receives a permanent number, followed by a two letter designation, which identifies the type of cross involved. (A horse with number 333QG would indicate the 333rd horse registered, and the fact that it has a registered Quarter Horse sire and an unregistered grade dam). (Horse number 367AQ, would indicate the 367th horse registered and the fact that it has a registered Arabian sire and a registered Quarter Horse dam.
We hope you'll join us, in making these special horses even more special, and giving them a chance to be recognized for their superior characteristics!!
